Dr. Donovan A. Watts, Ph.D.
Dr. Donovan A. Watts is an Assistant Professor of American Politics in the Department of Political Science at Auburn University. Dr. Watts’ research interests include American politics, with a focus on political behavior, political socialization, Black politics, and racial and ethnic politics. His current research agenda analyzes how the generation one was born in influences the political behaviors of different racial and ethnic groups. Moreover, Dr. Watts’ research has been published in the Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics and has contributed op-eds through the Phelan United States Centre and The Conversation. Additionally, his book, “The Politics of Black Millennials” (under contract with University of Michigan Press) examines how experiences with race have uniquely shaped Black millennials’ political attitudes and policy preferences as compared to Black non-millennials (Baby boomers and Gen X’ers).
Furthermore, Dr. Watts is a demonstrated leader in higher education. As a first-generation scholar from Detroit, MI, Dr. Watts began his academic career at a community college (Schoolcraft College) before transferring to his undergraduate institution (Central Michigan University—Fire UP!). Dr. Watts uses his story as a roadmap to help others navigate their university experiences. This has led to numerous fellowships while becoming a sought-out expert in higher education and politics.
